Roman Roaming - Unveiling the Eternal City's Timeless Treasures

Buongiorno! As you are reading this, I am sipping my Aperol Spritz in the Roman countryside. I’ve been here for the past few days, fulfilling my Maid of Honour duties for my best friend’s wedding. And what better excuse to share with you my travel blog of Rome itself? Ovviamente…

So get ready for a Roman escapade filled with tantalising flavours, jaw-dropping history, and a dash of that famous Italian charm. It’s a city of passionate romances, ancient wonders and bowls of carbonara the size of my head.

Join me as I embark on a journey through its enchanting cobblestone streets, unveiling where to stay, what to see, experience, and, of course, indulge in.

Where to Stay:

If you’re after an unforgettable experience, the historic center of Rome is your ultimate haven. You can indulge in luxurious hotels and boutique apartments near the Spanish Steps, the breathtaking Pantheon or the Palazzo Dama. If you fancy a more laid-back, bohemian vibe, the Trastevere district offers charming accommodation with its labyrinthine streets and bustling bars and restaurants. A little tip: if you come during the summer, make sure your place has aircon… it gets HOT!

What to See:

Vatican City

This spiritual and cultural masterpiece is within the walls of Vatican City. You can marvel at the exquisite art in the Vatican Museums, see the breathtaking beauty of the Sistine Chapel, and stand in awe of the magnificence of St. Peter's Basilica.

Here you can wander through the ruins of the once vibrant heart of ancient Rome. Just imagine the bustling marketplace and political hub that once stood here.

Ah, of course I must include this! Toss a coin over your shoulder into this Baroque masterpiece which will ensure you return to Rome. Top tip: come after dinner at midnight to escape the crowds.

Step back in time and embrace the grandeur of ancient gladiator battles as you explore the Colosseum's massive arches. Just imagine the roars of the crowd cheering on combatants. Or a shirtless Chris Hemsworth. Whatever works for you.

The timeless masterpieces of Michelangelo adorning the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel are one of the most amazing things you’ll ever see. How he managed to paint the sky-high ceilings is beyond me.

Pluck up your courage and stick your hand into the Mouth of Truth at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Will it bite? If you tell a lie, it just might! Tell the truth and apparently you’ll find your soulmate.

Witness the art of "la dolce vita" unfold in this lively square. It’s brimming with street performers, artists, and charming cafes. I once had a portrait of myself done…. It was pretty shocking to be honest!

Experiences to Cherish:

Ride a Vespa

Rent a (preferably red) Vespa and zip through the Roman streets. You'll feel like Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in "Roman Holiday".

Where better to learn the culinary secrets of the ancients with a Roman cooking class. Master the art of making the perfect pasta and the secret sauce to a happy belly!

I love Rome at night. You can embark on an enchanting nighttime tour of Rome's ancient sites, where history really comes alive in the moonlight.

I highly recommend exploring the eerie catacombs. It's like a spooky treasure hunt, but you'll find skeletons instead of gold!

You can join the locals on their traditional evening stroll through the city streets. Experience the art of "la dolce far niente" (the sweetness of doing nothing) as you soak in the chilled out atmosphere.

Sunset at Gianicolo Hill

Probably one of my favourire experiences is to catch a breathtaking sunset from the Gianicolo Hill. See the city draped in golden hues while the bells of Rome's churches serenade you. With a glass of p-sec in hand, obvs.

Delectable Delights

Amatriciana

I usually dive headfirst into an Amatriciana, a pasta dish infused with tangy tomato sauce, pancetta, and a dash of spicy red pepper. Delish.

Carciofi alla Romana

These Roman-style artichokes are to die for, where these humble vegetables are transformed into a heavenly dish with garlic, mint, and olive oil.

Pizza al Taglio

Grab a slice of heaven - or four! This crispy, thin-crusted "pizza al taglio" is usually sold by weight at local pizzerias.

Tiramisu

What is better than the divine pleasure of tiramisu? Simply put, it’s a heavenly concoction of mascarpone cheese, coffee-soaked ladyfingers, and bliss.

Carbonara

Ah, Rome’s signature pasta dish - the delectable carbonara. Velvety egg yolks, pancetta, pecorino cheese, and black pepper dance harmoniously in this Roman masterpiece. Yes please. Ps: The Gluten-free pasta in Rome is delish and pretty much everywhere serves it.

Supplì

Rome’s beloved street food - the supplì – is a fried rice ball is stuffed with oozy mozzarella and coated in breadcrumbs. Trust me, you will not just be having one.

Cacio e Pepe

The magic of "cacio e pepe," a humble pasta dish that make the two main ingredients of cheese and black pepper come together perfectly.

Gelato

No trip to Rome is complete without a gelato stop – or five. My personal fave? Classic Stracciatella. Skull emoji worthy.
