21 Questions: Makeup Edition

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have heard of Allie Glines, the self-taught makeup maven and YouTube extraordinaire who's bossing the beauty game, one fabulous look at a time.

Armed with her brushes and a passion for all things glam, she's the ultimate example of slaying the game. With her witty charm and relatable approach, Allie's tutorials will have you laughing and learning in equal measure.

So for this week’s blog, I have taken a leaf out of her book (or shall I say channel) and answered 21 questions about all things makeup.

Listen to Allie’s original 21 questions here and let’s get stuck into my answers – the good, the bad, the bold and the beautiful.

1.     What is the oldest makeup product in your collection?

Ooh, I think it's got to be Benefit’s Lash lovies. I think these first came out in the 90s. They are coloured cream mascara in a tube. You would use a disposable mascara wand to apply them. Obvs they are just in a box as you could never use them now, but what a cool thing to have. I have quite a lot of old Benefit products as my friend Aly collected a lot of them and gave them to me.

2.     What is your most recent makeup purchase?

A new set of beauty blenders. These are a kit essential for me, and the OG’s are the best, as is the same for most things right? I use these to blend in the perfect base. Just ensure you dampen them first so the product doesn’t get soaked up.

3.     What is the first makeup product you ever used?

My nan's pink lipstick from Derby market. I remember the smell reminded me of plasticine and the colour was a cerise pink. I must have been five and I covered my entire face in it. I thought I looked beautiful, and obviously my nan agreed.

4.     What is a makeup trend you used to love but now hate?

I wouldn’t say I hate any trends. I love seeing what people do with makeup, particularly when it’s something creative. What I would say is that most trends stem from something in the past. Underpainting is a great example. Makeup artists have done this forever. But like they say, things always come back around.

5.     What is a makeup product everyone should own?

Without a shadow of a doubt, a killer red lipstick. Even if you think red doesn’t suit you: it does. A red lip has the mystical ability to transform your entire vibe, turning you into a bold, unstoppable force of nature. Not quite in the mood for full-on fire engine red? Gently dab it on for a more low-key lip tint.

6.     What is your favourite step in your makeup routine?

Ok, so on me, my eye makeup as I love being creative and this is the place to do it. But on a shoot, it’s all about skin for me. I am obsessed with making the complexion look glowy and healthy. I want the re-toucher to look at my work and not have to do a thing. That’s always the goal.

7.     What is a makeup product you can’t live without?

OMG there are so many. However, if I had to say one, I would say that it would have to be eyelash curlers. They make such a huge difference to your lashes, which then opens up your eyes. The Shiseido and Suquu ones are my fave. Japanese lash curlers are elite.

8.     What sparked your love for makeup?

My mum was a model before I was born and when I was very young, so I was always surrounded by makeup. Both my nans also loved makeup, so I think it’s fair to say that I got my passion for products from these three.

9.     What is the worst makeup look you’ve ever done?

Do you know what? I don’t think any makeup look is bad, really. And I mean that in general. If you like a look, rock it. And I’m talking to my 15-year-old-Heather Shimmer-pearly eyeshadow-self.

10.  What is your favourite makeup look you’ve ever done?

Oh man there are so many to choose from. I loved when I once covered a model's face entirely in glitter, that was so cool. I also loved the makeup I did for the first-ever Matthew Williamson show that I led. There was so much pressure but my team and I nailed the most beautiful, glowy skin with a graphic liner. I’ll be forever proud of that.

11.  What is your favourite drugstore makeup product?

I think it has got to be Maybelline mascaras. I haven’t met one I didn’t like.

12.  What is your favourite splurge makeup product?

I love a Lisa Eldridge lipstick and a Pat McGrath palette. They are, without doubt, worth every penny.

13.  What is your most repurchased makeup product?

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I’m never without it.

14.  What is your earliest makeup memory?

My mum painting our faces for Halloween. She was a pretty good face painter, so we would turn up with some epic homemade costumes (one of my faves was a spider with 8 legs made from tights stuffed with newspaper), paired with the face paint to match.

15.  What is your favourite place to shop for makeup?

In-store, at Space NK. The beauty experts are always so friendly and knowledgeable and the stores are laid out so nicely. In the US, online, Cult Beauty. I love their ‘why it's cult’ paragraphs on each product as it helps you learn about the brand as well as the product.

16.  What is the most underrated makeup product?

I’m not sure it's underrated as such, but blusher is definitely one of the most important products. IMO no look is complete without it. If I’m bare-faced and trying on a new outfit that I’ve just bought, I’ll always add a bit of blush as it just adds a healthy, balanced glow to your face. It just instantly makes you look better.

17.  What is the most overrated makeup product?

Liquid eyeliner! I much prefer a pencil or a gel one. Its beauty lies in its ease of use and versatility. Unlike liquid eyeliner, pencil eyeliner glides on smoothly with little effort, making it the perfect choice for makeup beginners or if you’re in a rush. Pencil eyeliner also tends to be gentler on sensitive eyes, undoubtedly making it the ultimate winner.

18.  What is a discontinued product you wish would come back?

I’m going back to Benefit here, and it's got to be their Hollywood Glow Balm. OMG, I loved this stuff. It gave parts of your body the perfect amount of glow and bronze. Damn, that was a great product.

19.  Where do you go to for makeup inspiration?

Anywhere and everywhere. From nature to fashion, TV to film, magazines and music videos to social media. Inspiration can literally occur at any moment.

20.  What do you hope to see less of in makeup future?

Judgement. We all know that social media (and the media in general) have created unnecessary and unattainable beauty standards. Makeup should make you feel good. Don’t let anyone tell you any different.

21.  What do you hope to see more of in makeup's future?

Can I say glitter?! Haaa! I mean I always want more eco-friendly glitter. You can never have enough.
