Ibiza: The White Isle

Oh Ibiza, how I love you. I’ve been going to the White Isle for over 20 years. Ironically, on my first trip when I was 18, I came home after a week as I hated it. Although I’m pretty sure that was to do with the fact that I was staying in a grotty flat in San Antonio. Its fair to say, I’ve never stayed in that area again. For me, that’s the area that gave Ibiza a bad rep. It’s not just a party ISLAND (although I’ve had many a party there). It’s a place of beauty that adapts to the experience you want to gain from it. Whether that be dancing until 6am, hiking, sangria in the sand, yoga classes, swimming at sunset, eating glorious food or basking in the sun, or, in fact, all of it.

The island is referred to as female and in the distance, you will see Es Vedra; rumour has it the monolithic limestone rock formation, off Cala D’hort on the south coast of Ibiza, is the third most magnetic point in the world and has long been referred to as the source of Ibiza’s inexplicable energy. Is this the reason many of us are drawn back to the island year after year? Who knows.

Either way, I know my soul is more content after a trip. So here are my secret spots, the places me and my friends love to visit over and over again. Enjoy and please do write your favourite places in the comments. Let’s share the love, because that’s what Ibiza would do.

Cala Gracionata

Best for a chilled day

Heaven on earth. One of my all-time favourite spots in the entire world. With its own little private beach, you can sit here through lunch and dinner, sipping on the best cocktails (try their tequila Bloody Mary), incredible food (their catch of the day is always magnificent), amazing service, the best vibe and a stunning view with regular dips in the crystal-clear waters. Be sure to pre-book months in advance as I’m not the only one that loves this secluded spot.

Best for big DJs

This is a pretty cool club as it’s outside. The likes of Calvin Harris have regular slots and the vibe and sound system are mega. They do pack in the people, so this isn’t good if you don’t like crowds. But if like me, you’re happy to crowd surf, then grasp onto this vibe and hit the dancefloor.

Best for people watching

I only go on a Tuesday because that is Kisstory Day and who doesn’t love a bit of RnB and Garage whilst covered in glitter. And yep, glitter is essential. This is honestly the best place for people watching as everyone goes all out. I probs wouldn’t recommend going in the pool. All sorts goes on in there. I would recommend the sushi and the frozen cocktails though. Pre-book a bed to guarantee some shade and a seat.

Best for day dancing

I’m warning you now, this is one of the most expensive places on the island IF YOU GET A BED. I swear they add about 90% service onto your bill because there’s no way I drank that much tequila (is there?!) Anyway, my tip is to order at the bar. A classic vodka Fanta limon is about £12 and comes in what can only be described as a fishbowl-size glass. Then just hang out on the dance floor and enjoy the DJ’s and live music whilst occasionally taking a dip in the sea to cool off.

Best for Chilled day drinks and great food

I really like Nassau. It is very relaxed. I would 100% recommend booking a bed for the day and a table for lunch as it gets very busy. The food is fantastic as is the cava sangria. Just get a jug each with a straw and be done with it.

Best for a late lunch and sunset

This place is perfect if you want a late lunch. Again, the food and drinks are beautiful, as is the view. Stay until sunset, you won’t regret it.

Best for a sundowner and dinner

The views from this spot are insane. And the food is divine. Although I will say it is expensive. But it is a truly special spot so save it for your final night. They also host outdoor cinema nights on the rocks. Not a bad place to watch an old classic whilst sipping on an exceptional mojito paired with some of the best calamari I’ve ever had.

Best for a classic Ibiza moment

This is a classic Ibiza spot that always has a good vibe. Because of where it’s based, the view for sunset is great. If you’re there in the day, there’s a beach below that you can wander down to. It’s not necessarily my first choice anymore as so many great places have launched since it opened, but it’s a fail-safe option.

Best for a night you won’t forget

There is nothing else like Lio’s on the island. This is a cabaret club that entertains you from start to finish. I would recommend going for their dinner sitting. It is pricey but it’s worth it. Such an amazing place to go with a group of friends for a wild night.

Best for Brekkie

There’s a few of these on the island and their breakfasts are the best. From fresh juices to smoothie bowls to eggs galore, it’s a great place to get in your greens before the party starts.

Best for sunset drinks

This beauty is sat between the golden sands of Cala Conte and it is a vibe. The chilled Ibiza sounds are brought to you by some of the best DJs on the island. If you want to experience a true Ibiza sunset, head here.

Best for a night of dancing to your own drum

The icon that is Pikes, known for its raucous parties hosted by the likes of Freddie Mercury and George Michael (Club Tropicana was filmed there don’t you know). It’s a place full of fun and frolicking. Be sure to visits Sunny’s Boudoir for some fancy dress. The nights are usually guest list only, so book way before your visit.

Ok, a boat trip here IS A MUST. I actually love to stay on the island (it’s a 25 min ferry ride from Ibiza-that’s where I am right now). However, a day trip on a private boat is also great. You’ll be able to swim in crystal clear waters whilst cocktail speedboats ride up to you making you the best Mojitos ever. And your captain will take you to incredible lunch spots for paella galore. I kinda don’t want to give too much away about Formentera as you really need to experience it for yourself. Just know that the vibe is chilled, the water is like a bath and the beach shacks are some of the best places you’ll ever visit. I could live here forever.

Beaches

There are so many beaches surrounding the White Isle, it’s obviously nicknamed that for a reason. Here are some of my faves:

Las Salinas Beach

This is a beautiful beach that still has the party atmosphere of Ibiza thanks to the cute bars that surround it. You can hire sunbeds and parasols and spend the day taking in the atmosphere and sipping on a cold beer.

Oh, I love this beach. It’s surrounded by stunning red cliffs. The water is very shallow making it warm to swim in and a great spot for snorkelling.

This beach town is on the other side beautiful part of the island. It’s very relaxed and great for families. Give Babylon’s a go for a great beach lunch.

The approach to this beach through valleys and hills is beautiful. It’s a very picturesque beach with its partly pebbly sand. The sea is rocky making it excellent for snorkelers, but take your sea shoes.

Accommodation

So, we usually stay in Airbnb’s as we find them to be more reasonable. We like to stay in the north of the island. Everywhere in Ibiza is 20 minutes from each other, and your hosts or hotels will give you local taxi numbers. Just be prepared for them to be late and to take cash only.

Airbnb-wise, it’s best to just search the site to find ones that suit your needs. I did ask my friends for their favourite hotels, so here is a list of them:
